Headquartered in London, UK, The Foundry is well-known for its flagship products NUKE and MODO. But the portfolio doesn’t stop there. One of the newer members to start making waves in the industry is KATANA, their solution for high-efficiency look development and lighting.
With customers like Pixar and ILM basing their lighting pipelines around KATANA, the team also aims to help small studios achieve the seemingly impossible demands for ‘better, faster, cheaper’ CG. Already, LAIKA, Iloura, Atomic Fiction and Tippett are following in the footsteps of their larger peers and creating amazing VFX and animated films with the help of KATANA.
According to The Foundry, KATANA saves time and money without sacrificing quality by eliminating long load-times for massive scenes—dramatically reducing artist downtime—and by letting artists work and collaborate in parallel, and reuse work between tasks and projects.
KATANA recently announced its availability on Windows, alongside its pre-existing Linux support. Studios can use their renderer of choice: there’s a unified workflow for RenderMan, V-Ray, Arnold and 3Delight, more render plug-ins to come, and hooks to integrate a custom renderer.
