GDC Roundup
Posted By Karen Moltenbrey| April 07, 2010
18,250. That is the number of attendees at this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC). A record. Not bad considering the drop in numbers at the other related trade shows during the past 12 months, including SIGGRAPH. Like always, GDC featured many software and hardware vendors showing off their products. I won’t list them here, but you can find the releases in the special News area dedicated to ...

Posted By Hollywood.com| February 03, 2010
For the uninitiated, Mass Effect is a sci-fi RPG video game series from developer BioWare that finds the player taking on the role of a human soldier, Commander Shepard, who is tasked with investigating an ancient race of aliens believed to be a threat to not only mankind but the known universe. With the recent release of the second game in the series (to as equally rave reviews as the first entry ...

Borderlands
Posted By By Karen Moltenbrey| November 06, 2009
Independent game developer Gearbox recently released its latest title, Borderlands, published by 2K Games. The offering is a blend of RPG and FPS. What does this mean? Action wrapped up in a nice story, and guns, plenty of guns. What is different about this title, and what attracted me to it, is the aesthetic. It is actually beautiful. Artistic. I have to congratulate the crew at Gearbox for comin ...

What Makes a Game?
Posted By Karen Moltenbrey| May 20, 2009
It’s very easy to identify what is a video game and what is not. The Sims. Grand Theft Auto. MLB 09. World of Warcraft. Resistance 2. Yup, they are all video games. Whether an MMORPG, a first-person shooter, or a life-simulation game, they all have one component in common: interactivity. Well, that seems simple enough. But would the Wii Fit fit into this category? It has an interactive component ( ...

Apple’s Big Bite
Posted By Karen Moltenbrey| May 20, 2009
In the May issue of Computer Graphics World, contributing editor George Maestri discussed how cutting-edge graphics technologies are finding their way to a host of mobile devices, particularly cell phones. One company leading the charge is Apple, with its got-to-have iPhone. It surfs the ‘Net. It plays videos. It plays games. It gives directions. Whatever you want, there’s an App for that. Accordi ...

What’s Old is New Again
Posted By Karen Moltenbrey| May 20, 2009
It seems like just yesterday (though it was in late 2006) when Sony released the PlayStation 3. Crowds were lined up outside of stores, with eager fans—teens, parents, 30-something-year-olds—camped out in parking lots in the bitter cold, hoping to score one of the little black boxes. I watched the news reports, shaking my head—not so much in disbelief, but in puzzlement. Who would want a game syst ...
