SAN RAFAEL, Calif., June 29, 2006 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Autodesk (Nasdaq: ADSK) today announced the first purchase in Asia Pacific of its flagship Discreet Flame visual effects system running on the Linux operating system. The purchase was made by Frame, Set & Match (FSM), a Sydney-based, independent post-production facility with more than 20 years of experience in television commercials, feature films, television series and television documentaries.

FSM's post-production workflow now includes two of Autodesk's Discreet Flame systems on Linux, a customized Discreet Flame system on IRIX, and Autodesk's Discreet Fire nonlinear editing/finishing system. These Autodesk systems form the backbone of FSM's visual effects, compositing and long-form editing services.

We replaced one of our original Discreet Flame systems on SGI hardware with the new Discreet Flame running Linux on IBM hardware. We've found the new system to be reliable and fast. Operationally, our compositors can work in any of the Autodesk suites without having to adapt to different systems."
FSM has been working on high-resolution projects for more than five years. The majority of the facility's long-form work is completed at 2K resolution or higher, using Autodesk's visual effects and editing/finishing systems. Past credits include the acclaimed sci-fi television series Farscape and feature films The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, Hero, House of Flying Daggers and Little Fish. The facility is currently working on director Phillip Noyce's new feature, Hot Stuff, starring Tim Robbins and Derek Luke.
Schweikert continued, "We added Discreet Flame systems in order to meet increased demand for compositing from our growing client base. We decommissioned our old Quantel Editbox since the Flame system is better meeting our needs; we're now standardized on Autodesk systems."
FSM was the first Australian post-production facilities to offer nonlinear editing services, and has since grown to become a major force with the addition of high-definition, 2K and 4K data toolsets. Today, the company provides scanning, digital intermediate, editing and visual effects services.
FSM's new Discreet Flame systems operate on dual core, dual processor IBM workstations that have been upgraded with 8GB of RAM. This enables Flame to take advantage of more addressable memory on the 64-bit platform, in order to handle huge datasets and deliver easier image manipulation and improved stability.
