Soon the excitement surrounding the Academy Awards will be at an all-time high. But for now, some studios are buzzing with news that their projects are in the final stretch in the competition for the Oscar. One film that remains in the running for the Best Visual Effects Oscar is Alice in Wonderland, which employed a unique visual style implemented by the visionaries at Sony Pictures Imageworks under the direction of Imageworks’ senior visual effects supervisor Ken Ralston.
“The nomination is wonderful because working on Alice in Wonderland was one of the best creative experiences of my entire career. Tim Burton trusted us with his vision, and the work on the screen is the result of an amazing collaboration with hundreds of brilliant artists, including my fellow nominees and a great team on set,” Ralston said upon hearing that the film has made it into the final selection of nominees. “You hope to have an experience like this at least once in career, and I am so happy that our peers recognized the extraordinary complexity, detail, and accomplishment that the visual effects in Alice in Wonderland represent.”
Ralston, who is creative head of Sony Pictures Imageworks, is no stranger to Academy Awards. This, in fact, is his eighth Oscar nomination. And it could be his sixth win, having won an Academy Award for his work in Star Wars, Forrest Gump, Cocoon, Death Becomes Her, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
