Los Angeles, Calif. - The 2011 HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation in Post Production will be awarded to Testronic Labs and Steven J. Scott of EFILM. The Creativity and Innovation Award recognizes companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence in postproduction, whether in creative storytelling or technical innovation. It may be awarded (but not limited) to a unique creative project or other type of content, a workflow, proprietary technical development, hardware or software toolset, or a creative approach. The awards will be given at the HPA Awards ceremony on November 10, 2011 during a gala evening at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
"The Creativity and Innovation Award was created to identify and honor outstanding contributions from individuals and organizations from within our post production community," says Leon Silverman, president of the HPA. "The HPA takes pride in recognizing EFILM's Steven Scott for his role in the creative expression of Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life and to Testronic for their File Based Laboratory. These significant accomplishments represent the best of the deeply creative and innovative process and activities for which our post production community is known and is too rarely recognized. It is the HPA's great pleasure to be able to honor and celebrate this outstanding work."
The winning achievements demonstrate a notable step in post production through innovative thinking and execution of concept from a technical, creative or efficiency perspective. They were chosen from a large and varied field of entrants after an evening of presentations before a blue ribbon judging panel.
Winners of the 2011 HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation in Post Production include:
Steven J. Scott (EFILM): Tree of Life
Tree of Life's unique creative environment was developed to bring the look of the film to fruition during the DI process by fostering creative consensus between the DP, Director and VFX Supervisor; enabling filters to film out to a hi-con stock and creating proprietary Look Up Tables (LUTs) allowing for the widest range of information latitude possible.
Testronic Labs: File-Based QC Lab
The File-Based QC Lab is an innovative, ground-up design third party facility, implementing technology and an automated workflow for QC of the end-to-end file-based post production workflow, from mastering to consumer deliverables.
Steven J. Scott, Creative Director and Senior Colorist at EFILM commented, "I'm so happy to accept this award for a film I believe in and love so much, but it was Chivo Lubezki, Terrence Malick and Dan Glass whose creative needs helped pioneer this innovative use of the DI. I'd also like to acknowledge EFILM's incredible Imaging Science and Engineering teams, who have made this creative workflow possible."
Seth Hallen, CEO of Testronic Labs said, "Receiving the Creativity and Innovation Award is recognition of the highest order in our opinion, and extremely meaningful to us at Testronic Labs. The key implementation team of the File Based Lab at Testronic, led by Adam Lesh, has put their best and most creative thought into creating a process that was of actual value and service to our industry during a time of rapid change. We are delighted to accept this award."
