Golden Globes Winners

There has been a lot of discussion concerning the 2011 films in the running for Best Picture, and the first major awards event, the Golden Globes, has set the stage for this and other categories during the presentation January 15.
The voters’ selection? “The Descendents” for Best Motion Picture, Drama, which topped the much-discussed Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse,” “Martin Scorsese’s Hugo,” “Moneyball,” and “The Help.”

Tent-pole features are consisting more and more of visual effects-heavy films. On this front, Martin Scorsese, known for many daring (gritty, violent) films that do not incorporate visual effects, changed gears with “Hugo,” a charming period tale steeped in cutting-edge VFX. The project earned the famed director a Golden Globe for Best Director.

As for animation, the look of CG-animated films has certainly changed over the years—proved by last year’s computer-animated Western comedy “Rango.” Furthermore, well-known directors and VFX facilities have turned their attention to this medium, as is apparent with this year’s nominees: Gore Verbinski and ILM with “Rango” and Steven Spielberg and Weta with “The Adventures of Tintin.” The other nominees in this category carry the weight of big-name animation facilities: Sony Pictures Animation and Aaardman with “Arthur Christmas,” Disney-Pixar (and John Lasseter) with “Cars 2,” and DreamWorks (and Chris Miller) with “Puss in Boots.” Taking home the honors was “The Adventures of Tintin.”
