SAN FRANCISCO — Unity Technologies, provider of the Unity multi-platform engine and development tools, has announced upcoming support for the open source Tizen mobile operating system.
The deployment tools currently under development will allow Unity's massive community of developers to build and publish games to Tizen OS smartphones and tablets via the Tizen Store later this year.
Unity, which combines a high-powered engine and deep yet intuitive editor, takes the pain out of development by making the transition between platforms as easy as a click of a button. Supporting Tizen furthers Unity's quest to empower developers to deploy their games to as many platforms as possible, allowing creators to focus their energy on designing the best and most entertaining experiences.
Tizen, an open source operating system based around the Linux kernel and WebKit runtime, is supported by the Tizen Association, an organization made up of electronics industry mainstays looking to create a standard operating system that can be used across various types of devices including smartphones, tablets, Smart TVs, and in-vehicle infotainment systems.
"Unity and Tizen have a lot in common in that they both aim to make the creation and the deployment of games and other apps as easy as possible for developers," said David Helgason, CEO, Unity Technologies. "Tizen's broad OEM support and big market potential will provide another excellent avenue for our amazing community of mobile developers to find success."
"Games are one of the driving forces behind smartphone and tablet adoption," says Royichi Sugimura, Chairman of Tizen Association. "Unity support for Tizen OS ensures a huge number of talented developers making some of the most entertaining games have an efficient and powerful channel to publish their titles to Tizen Store."
Work has already begun to build Tizen deployment tools for the award winning and industry leading Unity game development engine and editor. The first Tizen-operated devices are scheduled to be released later this year and a selection of Unity-authored titles will be available at launch with the aid of Unity's game distribution channels. Fully supported deployment tools enabling Unity's massive developer community to publish their games to the Tizen Store for use on Tizen devices will follow in late 2013.
