LOS ANGELES & VANCOUVER — Character-effects firm MastersFX (www.mastersfx.com) has named longtime VFX producer Scott Coulter as its new VP/EP of visual effects. He worked with the studio and its founder Todd Masters more than 15 years ago on project such as Demon Knight, Dark Skies and Mortal Kombat. Back then the studio was using puppets and prosthetics exclusively, but over the years has evolved its workflow and now incorporates a blend of practical and digital makeup and special FX, prosthetics and animatronics. The studio has contributed to feature films, TV shows, and commercials.
Coulter has over three decades of experience in the field, having worked on more than 200 films. His credits include The Expendables, Conan the Barbarian, Dogma, My Favorite Martian, The Crow, and many others. In 2001, Coulter, as VFX EP, founded and launched Worldwide FX, headquartered in Bulgaria, to meet the visual effects needs of NuImage/Millennium Films. He eventually expanded the facility, opening a second studio in Shreveport, LA.
MastersFX’s work can currently be seen on Spring, Hemlock Grove, The Flash, Arrow, iZombie, and Falling Skies. The studio is currently prepping a new Underworld movie, a television pilot, and a soon-to-be-announced feature film project with Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn. Coulter is already overseeing day-to-day operations on VFX at the studio’s Los Angeles headquarters, and is spearheading character and creature design work for their current slate of projects.
