“Gaming is a key part of the creative ecosystem that brings us together, and now more than ever it provides us with a unique sense of escape and adventure in uncertain times," said Hugh Forrest, Chief Programming Officer for SXSW. "We were devastated that we weren’t able to celebrate our honorees in person with the cancellation of our event, but glad that we’re still able to share their achievements and creative works with our community."
Winners of the 2020 Gaming Awards were determined by a combination of public voting and input from SXSW staff and advisory board members.
For 2020, the Game Industry Champion of Change Award goes to AbleGamers’ Steven Spohn, whose perseverance has led to paradigm-shifting conversations on accessibility in games. The Journalist of the Year Award goes to WIRED staff writer Cecilia D’Anastasio, for work that held the game industry accountable and helped further a much-needed culture shift.
