The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences first acknowledged the potential of animated features at the 11th Academy Awards in 1939, when Walt Disney received an Honorary Oscar for his groundbreaking motion picture Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In the following decades, other animated features were occasionally honored with Special Achievement awards. The modern category of Best Animated Feature was introduced in 2002, at the 74th Academy Awards, at which producer Aron Warner received the iconic gold statuette for DreamWorks Pictures’
Shrek.
An international community of over 10,000 artists, filmmakers and executives, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was founded in 1927, with Douglas Fairbanks as its first president. The 95th Academy Awards is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
