Career Profile: FutureWorks VFX Supervisor Vinay Chuphal Discusses the Future of AI

As a VFX supervisor, how has AI impacted the industry in the last year and what is your opinion on its use?

Vinay Chuphal: Prior to recent times, Indian cinema wasn’t really impacted by the use by AI. However, we are starting to see an increase on the use of it as AI naturally evolves. The areas I have seen affected by it are concept design and the DMP process. I have also seen an increase in clients coming up with ideas and using AI tools to create them.

AI applications have the potential to automate certain tasks in the VFX and 3D animation industries, such as motion tracking, rotoscoping, prep, recreation of BG plate, and concept design, to name a few. However, it’s unlikely that AI can fully replace these, due to the need for human creativity and artistic visions within the fields. VFX artists and 3D animators bring a unique understanding of storytelling, emotion, and artistic expression to their work, which is not easily replicated by AI. Instead, AI tools are more likely to augment the capabilities of artists and animators, allowing them to focus on more creative and complex aspects of their craft.

Some see AI as a valuable tool that helps to streamline workflows, improve productivity, and enhance creative possibilities. It can free up artists' time from mundane tasks, allowing them to focus on more artistic and innovative aspects of their work.

Ultimately, the use of AI in VFX is a topic of ongoing discussion and evolution within the industry, with it bringing many benefits and challenges to consider.

How will AI impact the VFX pipeline in the next three years?

Vinay Chuphal: While AI may automate certain routine tasks and contribute to efficiency, it’s not expected to replace the creative input and artistic vision of humans in these industries. Instead, the integration of AI tools may empower artists and animators to focus more on creative aspects by automating repetitive tasks. With any technological change, adaptation and upskilling will be crucial for professionals in the animation and VFX industries to stay relevant and harness the benefits of emerging technologies.

Within the next three years, VFX industries are likely to continue evolving and adapting in the AI era, and there are several reasons to believe that they will survive and even thrive:

Creativity and Artistry: While AI can assist in certain aspects of animation and VFX production, the creative and artistic elements of these industries are fundamentally human. The ability to conceive unique ideas, storytelling, character design and artistic expression are aspects where human creativity continues to play a crucial role.

Human Touch in Storytelling: Storytelling is a significant part of animation, and connecting emotionally with the audience often requires a human touch. While AI can analyze data and trends, it may struggle to replicate the nuanced and empathetic storytelling that humans excel at.

Collaboration and Teamwork: Animation and VFX projects often involve collaboration among diverse teams. Humans bring a level of teamwork, communication, and synergy that is challenging for AI to replicate fully.

Adaptation to New Technologies: The animation and VFX industries have a history of adapting to new technologies. AI itself can be a tool to enhance efficiency and streamline certain processes within these industries. As technology evolves, professionals in these fields are likely to incorporate AI tools into their workflows.

Do you think the VFX industry is becoming more globalized in India? How are you seeing these changes?

Vinay Chuphal: Yes, definitely! Many projects from studios across the world are collaborating with studios based in India. The main advantage is the cost, but also the quality of artistry India can produce is enhancing day by day. This will eventually lead to the betterment of artists in India and the approach towards regional shows too. This has also led to a stage in which Indian artists are capable of getting hired directly from Tier 1 VFX houses outside India.

What key developments have you seen in the VFX industry during your journey that have elevated projects that you have seen and worked on?

Vinay Chuphal: The standard of the workflow is the main development. Through the advancement of time, VFX houses across India are implementing more technically proven workflows. This leads to the outputs being validated technically and the creative calls are to be left at the free will of the heads.

The equipment and hardware used for gathering on-set data have improved tremendously. This helps us to exactly replicate the set digitally and incorporate the additional CGI elements with way better accuracy.

Advancement of applications used in VFX. The very underrated topic of VFX applications that have evolved through time has eased out the redundant tasks on artists and allowed them to focus more on the creative process. Most applications deal with the technical details on the backend and the user has to be least bothered about validating time and again.

Are there any projects that FutureWorks is working on that have a global presence?

Vinay Chuphal: Yes! The Peripheral, Lost in Space (all seasons), Westworld (Season 2 and Season 3), The Chosen, Ricky Stanicky, MacGyver, and a couple of other shows yet to release in 2024.
Indian shows like Jaane Jaan, Pathaan, Rocky & Rani, Rana Naidu, and a few others also have been global hits in theatres and on OTTs.

How is FutureWorks working to become more globally involved within the VFX industry?

Vinay Chuphal: It's essential for all studios to stay abreast of these industry changes, continue learning, and adapt their skills to effectively lead their teams and deliver high-quality visual effects.
FutureWorks studios have been actively working towards becoming more globally involved within the VFX industry in several ways.

Here are some key strategies and initiatives we have undertaken:

Quality Standards and Talent Development: FutureWorks studios have focused on raising the quality of their output to meet international standards. They have invested in training programs and talent development to enhance the skills of their artists and technicians. By nurturing a pool of skilled professionals, FutureWorks offers high-quality VFX services that are competitive on a global scale.

Collaboration with International Productions: FutureWorks studios have actively sought partnerships and collaborations with international production houses, including major Hollywood studios. By working on international projects, we gain exposure to global best practices, enhance their technical capabilities, and build relationships with international clients. These collaborations also provide opportunities for Indian artists and technicians to work on high-profile projects and gain valuable experience.

Embracing Cutting-Edge Technologies: We have been quick to adopt and leverage cutting-edge technologies to enhance their capabilities. They invest in state-of-the-art infrastructure, software tools, and hardware resources to deliver high-quality VFX services. By staying at the forefront of technological advancements, we can offer advanced VFX solutions that meet the demands of international clients.

VFX-heavy Projects: Working on VFX-heavy overseas productions gives us credibility and advancements in the way we approach challenges in CGI scope. Eventually, the studio develops its talent pool and adds good credit to the global presence of the brand. Learning and adding a newer scope of work each year through a learning approach also widens the service areas we cover under the Studio name. This has also led to more overseas studios approaching us for non-conventional VFX services.

What changes do you see within the industry that will impact VFX supervisors like yourself?

Vinay Chuphal: The future for VFX supervisors looks promising, as the demand for high-quality visual effects in movies, OTT movies, and shows continues to grow. To stay ahead in the industry, VFX supervisors need to keep up to date with the latest developments. This includes reading articles and interviews, analyzing breakdowns from top movies, experimenting with new tools, and exchanging ideas with colleagues to benefit from their experiences.

One significant change in the industry is the increasing use of AI and ML technologies. These technologies are being employed in various aspects of the VFX industry, such as automating tasks, enhancing post-production processes, and improving workflows. As a VFX supervisor, it will be important to familiarize myself with these technologies to effectively leverage their benefits.

Additionally, the VFX industry is constantly evolving, with new software tools and techniques being developed. VFX supervisors must stay updated with the latest software and workflows to effectively guide their teams and communicate with other departments. This will help me stay at the forefront of technology and adapt to the changing landscape of the industry.

As the industry continues to evolve, VFX professionals, including supervisors, will need to remain proactive in updating their skills and knowledge. By staying abreast of industry changes, continuously learning, and adapting their skills, VFX supervisors can effectively lead their teams and deliver high-quality visual effects in this dynamic field.
